Vogue Living's take on Federation Renovation
“Federation homes are handcrafted and detail-focused, but we are big believers in those things with our design,” says Alexandra Ponting of AP Design House.
“I love working on beautiful old dwellings because of that attention to detail, the quality of materials and exceptional craftsmanship."
My comment: "These ceilings are still mostly white, but beige and neutral colours predominate; furnishings are modern, and mostly minimal"
"Season's Greetings! May this Inspiration lead you to Beautiful Heritage results."
From "12 Federation-era homes full of heritage charm"
by Nina Miyashita and Divya Venkataraman
"Many of us look for charm and character in a home—qualities that seem ineffable at first mention, but can often be reduced to the presence of a touch of history, a little aesthetic reference to the past.
It’s in the iron lacework on the balcony, or the decorative plaster architraves, or the original fireplaces that take a home just outside of the mundane present and allows a sense of history and narrative to seep through its brickwork.
Federation-era houses refer to those built around 1901, the year of Australia's unification into a country from a set of states and territories.
The style, sturdy and traditional, draws from English Edwardian houses, which are distinguishable for their red brick exterior, long central corridors, and old-world detailing."
"Federation houses, however, turn the style into something more appropriate for Australian climes, with the addition of patios and verandahs, the opening up of interior space, and a penchant for greenery throughout."
"In the modern day, some of the most striking examples of Federation homes are not those that have been completely preserved in their original states, but which have gently been escorted into the present, with the help of architects such as Flack Studio and Mary Ellen Hudson.
A considered approach to renovation and a modern kind of interior design melds the old and the new, setting off traditional foundations with the addition of new, innovative architectural features."
